ndnickerson: (yuletide powerpuff girls)
Hi Yuletide Santa! Thanks so much for taking on this challenge! =D

General info: I'm a canon pairings kind of girl. I'm a sucker for romance, formal wear, angst, drama, action, adventure, humor, snuggling, making out, missions (if applicable), convoluted plots, simple plots, fluff... yeah. Not a fan of lots of graphic torture*. Emotional angst? Hell yes, as long as it ends on a more positive note. If you're in the mood to do an AU (or alternate canon), go for it! If you can't do the pairing I requested, gen would also be awesome. If you want to write graphic het sex, I'm totally up for that. Anyway, whatever you do is going to be great, and I can't wait!

Getting a holiday-set or holiday-themed story would be great if you want to do that. Gender-swapping two characters (as long as the pairing remains het) could work too, if that's where your mind goes. Also, if I requested a fandom, I've been through the whole thing (or whatever has legally aired in the US; if it's available through alternate channels, I probably haven't seen it).

*The Addamses are kind of exempt from this because they're supernatural and don't really seem to experience pain the way normal people do, so... I guess I really don't want a lot of meaningless pain inflicted on someone if that person isn't an Addams, who would just laugh at it.

Here are my requests:

yuletide!

ndnickerson: (anchorman-scotchy scotch scotch)
So I wrote three stories for Yuletide 2011.

My assigned recipient asked for Community, Jeff and Annie, and while I've written one of those before (plans and their opposite), I had this grand idea for what I would do with this one... and then I ended up swamped with work until December 19. Like as in all of December 19. And stories were due December 22. So I didn't start it until December 20.

So I ended up with something that was practically what I wanted - I didn't pull the trigger at the end, although it could easily be followed up, and I wanted something with a slow burn anyway.

-Blindsided (rated T, pretty much for language)
Annie isn't sure who she is yet, but Jeff likes watching her try to figure it out.

I had this idea I'm utterly incapable of writing, that in the background of this story Troy and Abed are using their film (the zombie movie, or Attack of the Clones) to infiltrate the HVAC annex and figure out Vice Dean Laybourne's evil endgame, which triggers the hostage situation that kicks off the story, and Britta is eventually roped into it (hence her cryptic voicemail to Jeff). Someone else would have to write it, though.

Then I started reading through the other prompts, hoping to find a Nancy Drew one I could write, but I couldn't write the very few requests that weren't mine. I found a request for Mad Men, and saw Peggy/Father Gill, and... well, that's one of my favorite pairings for the show, and I've found very few stories written that feature it, and I'd had a premise gestating for a while so I dusted that off. (I swore I wasn't going to offer Mad Men this year because I did Mad Men for the previous two Yuletides, but it was like this didn't count.)

-negotiable affection (rated T, pretty much for... angst)
It had already been a rough day when John saw her across the bar.

This started in Father Gill's head and stayed there, because I think Peggy is a little hard to read. Sometimes I think that she does things and doesn't analyze too closely why she's doing them or what the implications are, and other times she seems deeply interested in repercussions. This takes place a few years after S2, the only season he was in; the Peggy he runs into is more of a late-S4 Peggy. I think S4 Peggy would be more likely to act on the attraction the two of them seemed to share than S2 Peggy, anyway. I really liked the mood of the bar in this.

Then I ran across a Jane Eyre prompt, and I don't turn down excuses to write Jane/Rochester. Even though I never wrote them until earlier this year for the Porn Battle.

-elegy (rated E, for sex)
Jane receives an entirely expected letter.

It was like 10pm when I started this, and I think it's a little uneven, but I went back and read basically the last chapter of the book and saw how Jane says she and Rochester were basically like two halves of the same brain during their marriage... and, given how easy it is to call Rochester a psychopath, I wanted to put them in a relationship that actually worked, and was the same kind of playful and loving that their courtship was. Jane says at the end that she'll soon receive a letter telling her of St. John's death, so this is her getting that letter.

All my recipients replied and said they enjoyed their stories, so hooray! That was pretty much all I was expecting, this year. I never thought any of them were going to get very popular, especially since I'm not good at the surrealism that the fandom likes to see in Community stories. I didn't read very much, either; I'm into pairings instead of gen right now, and since I haven't read Snuff yet I don't want to look at any of the Discworld fic, and... yeah.

But, another plug for the two stories I received:

-Inching Forward
(Community) - Jeff takes Annie back to his place after she gets drunk one night.

This is one of those fics that, in a good way, left me wanting to find out what happened next. I really like the way Jeff and Annie play off each other here and the implications of their conversation.

-Ask Me No Questions
(Outlander - Diana Gabaldon) - Claire and Jamie's first time after he punishes her for disobeying orders.

As the author points out, this isn't how it goes in the actual book (it falls during the first book of the series), but given their relationship later, I can definitely see this fitting in. I adore Jamie and Claire together. And it makes me want to read that book again. Mmmmm.

Hooray for Yuletide!

An updated Perry Mason where Della's a law student interning in Perry's office? Oh man. That'd be epic. If you can't do the pairing I requested, gen would also be awesome. If you want to write graphic het sex, I'm totally up for that. Anyway, whatever you do is going to be great, and I can't wait!

Okay, so, that sneaky [livejournal.com profile] shimmeryshine wrote me yuletide madness fic! And thus wins. (It's Legend of the Seeker, Richard/Kahlan: Here We Go Again.) It's lovely and sweet and hot and boy, do I wish we'd seen something like it on the show.

And my longer gift was, of course, First Chance of a Last Dance, Archer, Archer/Lana and Lana/Cyril.

I don't think either of them were recced, that I saw, which is a damn shame, because I loved them both. It's Archer! Lana being subjected to an intervention! And Richard/Kahlan! YES.

What I wrote:

false dichotomy, Mad Men, ensemble, gen-ish, beta'd by [livejournal.com profile] fairy_tale_echo and [livejournal.com profile] htbthomas

Writing this fic was like trying to run uphill through caramel, for some reason. I knew where I wanted to go but I still needed help to get through it, so my betas, especially [livejournal.com profile] htbthomas, really helped out. While I don't think we'll see Sal again on the show, it would be fantastic if we did.

we stood so long we fell, Nancy Drew, Nancy/Ned, beta'd by [livejournal.com profile] htbthomas

This one was easier and faster, and any problems are my fault since I wrote it so close to deadline. I couldn't bring myself to write a dark angsty fic so this one ended up light and pretty happy.

For some reason I haven't gotten around to reading that much yet, but I'm sure I will in the near future. (How can I resist steampunk AU? Not easily, that's how.) Thanks to everyone who read and/or commented!

i haven't done much yuletide reading yet. i keep glancing through fandoms and saying "eh" or seeing that a lot of the stories are slash or not my pairings and just moving on.

HOWEVER. for yuletide i got this great, amazing archer fic, First Chance of a Last Dance, with lana after the cyril breakup and a hilariously misguided intervention and dancing, and, yes. so super stoked.

(also i now apparently have a yuletide madness story-present that has yet to be revealed! THIS IS INDEED MADNESS.)

and, happily, i have received comments from both my recipients, so, hooray! (because really this year that's all i'm expecting.)

Merry Christmas, flist! I wrote two stories for yuletide (can't tell you which ones yet) and I've posted one so far for the nancy drew yuletide. I'm planning on working on some more during the break; it just took me SO LONG to do the yuletide. (but the recipient for that fic really enjoyed it, so yay!)

so, today mom and i did an excellent turkey. it's just under 10 pounds and we did 300 for 1 hour, 325 for one hour. hurrah! and i've made a pair of pecan pies, and we've done dressing, broccoli casserole, sweet potato casserole, deviled eggs, fruit salad, lemon curd bar cookies, pumpkin pies, congealed lime salad. i'll probably post some pics later.

anyway, if you've caught a few spare minutes, go visit nancydrewfic or yuletide and have fun! i will. later. once we're finished cooking. =D (i'm so looking forward to reading some more nancy drew stories after this morning's excellent story, the curse!)

fortnight!

+(i have had "fuck you fucking shark! fortnight!" in my head for far too long and since no one else seems to have that particular demetri martin album, no one knows what i'm talking about.)

+Sweet Lord i lost my mind while shopping today. haul:
-three prelit outdoor garlands, a velvet bow, a butterfly ornament, a tabletop tree decorated with pinecones, and wide ribbon for next year's decorating, since there was a sale.
-two bath bombs from lush (one is seaweed and the other is GLITTER. i was delighted.) and the friend i took there gave me some body wash because it was buy-one, get-two-free.
-alias seasons 1 and 2, damages season 1, veronica mars season 1 (i let a friend borrow it along with season 2 and it's been a year), public enemies on blu-ray, fired up! (i know. I KNOW. i just think it's hilarious, if INCREDIBLY stupid.) on dvd.
-used bookstore: library of america crime novels of the 1930s and 40s, library of america crime novels of the 1950s (they include the talented mr ripley and the postman always rings twice and the killer inside me and WOW, and the cashier who also owns the place chuckled when he saw me with them and said "i knew somebody would get these pretty quick, these are awesome and they look so clean"), a perry mason, a nancy drew (it's stained and cost 25 cents but i had to adopt it), and two willo davis roberts books, all for like $23

what did i plan on buying when i left the house? public enemies.

have i lost it? need you ask?

+because i'm anal:
i wrote 2 yuletide stories (i'm working on 2 more but i guess they'll be NYRs). between them: 347 hits, 23 comments, 10 bookmarks. haven't counted the recs. i'm happy. =D

here's my gift-story! (if you can access it.) four christmases. nancy drew, nancy/ned. four special christmases for nancy. it's absolutely lovely.

i've been poking around a bit but i don't want to prevent other people from seeing their own gifts, so i'll try again later. and i do have a couple of other prompts i was looking at, so maybe i'll play with those.

okay, time to make the sweet potato souffle.

Happy Christmas/Yuletide/Chris Pine! (my parents and i are watching star trek, can't you tell.)
