Day 06 - Favorite episode of your favorite TV show
I'm going to cheat
("now she says she's going to cheat?" you exclaim irritably at the computer screen. "like she ever does anything else?")
and say favorite episodes of 5 TV shows. And then probably embed video/explanation behind the cut because it always slows this blanking computer down/could spoil you.
01. The X-Files: Memento Mori
02. Mystery Science Theater 3000: Soultaker
03. Law & Order: Criminal Intent: Wee Small Hours
04. Mad Men: Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency/Shut the Door. Have a Seat
05. Chuck: Chuck vs the Colonel
01. The X-Files: Memento Mori
I was a rabid Mulder/Scully 'shipper, and "Never Again" was the week before (oh, oh, I still shudder), and then this episode came out. Mulder literally does everything he possibly can to help Scully, in his odd way, and then comes back to her, and they have that scene in the hallway at the hospital and that's when you realize that the writers probably ship them too (even Shiban, who I grew to distrust). Honestly, though, it's perfect, and in Season 4, before everything really went nuts.
02. Mystery Science Theater 3000: Soultaker
I was in high school when this came out, but couldn't guarantee that I would have access to the television when the episode aired (I went to a residential high school and we didn't have TVs in our rooms, only in the dorm TV room) and so I set up the VCR at home to record the season 10 premiere so I could be sure to watch it. And then it was cheeseball and horrendous and Joel came back and things were ridiculous and I loved it. I've seen this one so many times that I have most of the riffs memorized. It's one of the episodes I put on when I'm feeling sad because it always cheers me up.
03. Law & Order: Criminal Intent: Wee Small Hours
There's a lot to love about this episode (all four of the detectives work together, the judge tries to one-up Goren and gets smacked down, the Sinatra references) and it's set before the Goren backhistory took the show too far off the rails into a place that landed Goren in what was basically a mental institution, but the best part is the Goren and Eames interaction while Eames is on the stand having to read from her request for his reassignment, and the scene where he forgives her for it.
Which I would show you if it weren't all fan music videos.
04. Mad Men: Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency/Shut the Door. Have a Seat
"Guy Walks Into an Advertising Agency": What you have to love is that Don's been getting all pumped up and wondering what his place will be in the new company, but then someone comes in and his job is the same as it is now, and Joan's leaving, and everything's a mess, and then that hapless, Sal-crushing receptionist runs over Guy's foot with a lawn mower and all that game-changing that was going to happen when Lane Pryce left is undone. And Joan still leaves, because she's told everyone she is, but she and Don have that nice moment at the end when they're at the hospital. I do love the whole Chekhov's Lawnmower thing.
And then there's "Shut the Door. Have a Seat." Don's personal life is in shambles, the Brits are about to sell the company, and... and then all the sudden the episode turns into this amazing heist movie, and Don and Roger are okay again, and Don woos Peggy back from the dark side after an initial misstep, and Joan's back, and damned if it doesn't make you want Season 4 RIGHT NOW.
05. Chuck: Chuck vs the Colonel
Chuck's father is being held by the bad guys. Chuck gets a lead on where he is, but is forbidden to go after him, and Sarah is told to bring Chuck in so the NSA/CIA can put him into protective custody; finding his father is not a high priority for the government. So Chuck and Sarah run. All this happens at the end of the previous episode. Then, in this episode, we see Sarah and Chuck on the lam, literally moments away from having good-morning sex, and Casey finds them and there are explosions and Chuck gets the Intersect out of his head and... and, yeah. It's fantastic, and it does a great job of starting to set up the way I think Season 3 should have gone, but didn't, thanks to a lame meeting at a train station in the interim.
But if you've seen the episode, I'm sure you know what my favorite scene is.
